How GrappleDB Works

GrappleDB is the community-driven database for BJJ instructionals. Here's everything you can do — no account required to browse, just sign up to contribute.

Browse Without an Account

Search & Filter

Search across all instructionals by title, instructor, or category. Filter by technique area to find exactly what you need.

Read Reviews & Ratings

See what the community thinks before you buy. Every instructional shows its average rating and written reviews.

Compare Side-by-Side

Can't choose between two instructionals? Use the Compare tool to see ratings, price, and details head-to-head.

Check Price History

Every instructional page shows price history. Know whether that "50% off" is actually a good deal or just permanent marketing.

Rate & Review Instructionals

Go to any instructional page and click "Write a Review". Rate it from 1-10 and optionally write your thoughts. Your review helps the whole community make better buying decisions.

How to write a great review:

  • Mention your experience level (beginner, intermediate, competitor)
  • Note what style of game it fits (e.g., "great for no-gi bottom players")
  • Say whether the production quality and instruction clarity was good
  • Be specific about what worked or didn't work for you on the mats

Create Curated Lists

Build themed lists like "Best Leg Lock Instructionals" or "Complete Guard Passing Curriculum". Share your expertise by curating the instructionals you think every grappler should watch.

How to create a list:

  1. Go to Lists → Create New List
  2. Give it a title and optional description
  3. Choose public (others can see) or private (just for you)
  4. Browse instructionals and click the "Add to List" button on any instructional page
  5. Reorder items from your list's edit page
3

Save to Your Wishlist

Click the heart icon on any instructional to save it to your wishlist. Keep track of instructionals you're interested in and check back when prices drop. Find your wishlist anytime under My Account → Wishlist.

FAQ

Why not just read reviews on the seller sites?

Some instructional marketplaces reward customers with loyalty points for leaving reviews, which tends to produce a flood of vague, overly positive ratings. When almost everything sits at 4.8–5.0 stars, reviews stop being useful. GrappleDB exists because grapplers deserve honest, detailed feedback from people who have actually drilled and rolled with the material — not one-line reviews written to collect points.

Does GrappleDB sell or resell instructionals?

No. GrappleDB does not sell, resell, host, or distribute any video content. We are a review and discovery platform only. Every "buy" link on GrappleDB points directly to the official seller (BJJ Fanatics, JiuJitsu X, Submeta, etc.). We will never DM you offers, sell discount codes, or operate as a gray-market reseller. If someone claims to sell instructionals on behalf of GrappleDB, it's a scam — report it.

How will GrappleDB make money?

Transparency matters, so here's the plan: if GrappleDB grows into something the community finds genuinely useful, we intend to sustain it through affiliate partnerships with the instructional platforms. That means if you click a link to buy an instructional, the seller may pay us a small referral fee — at no extra cost to you. That's it. No ads, no paid subscriptions, no paywalled reviews. Affiliate links will always be clearly marked. And critically: reviews and ratings are completely independent of any partnership. We will never let a business relationship influence what the community thinks of an instructional.

Do I need an account?

Nope — you can browse, search, and compare without one. Sign up to leave reviews, create lists, and contribute to the community.

Where does the data come from?

Instructional data (titles, descriptions, prices, images) is sourced from platforms like BJJ Fanatics, JiuJitsu X, and Submeta. We started with BJJ Fanatics since they're the largest marketplace, and we're expanding to more sources as the concept proves out. Ratings and reviews come from the GrappleDB community — real grapplers sharing their honest opinions.

Can I edit or delete my review?

Yes. Go to the instructional page where you left a review. You'll see an "Edit Your Review" button if you're logged in. You can also delete your review using the delete button on your review.

How are instructor ratings calculated?

Instructor ratings use a Bayesian weighted average. This means an instructor with one perfect 10 won't outrank someone with dozens of 9.4-rated reviews. The more reviews an instructor's instructionals have, the more their rating reflects actual quality rather than small sample luck.

Is GrappleDB affiliated with any instructional seller?

No. GrappleDB is an independent, community-driven project. We catalog and index instructionals to help grapplers make informed purchasing decisions, but we are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any instructional marketplace.

I found a bug / have a feature request

GrappleDB is actively being developed. If you find something broken or have an idea for a feature, let us know through the community channels. We're building this for grapplers, by grapplers.
